We All Desire to be Happy!

Six weeks before his death, a reporter asked Elvis Presley, "Elvis, when you first started playing music, you said you wanted to be rich, famous and happy. Are you happy?"  "I'm lonely as hell" he replied.  -Source Unknown

If the average man, or woman on the street was asked what he, or she longed for most, I expect the answer, in most cases, would be “happiness." If so, then what is "true happiness?" It’s the relationship of humanity to God, and what God has done about us and for our salvation. It teaches a definite philosophy, a view of life we can either accept or reject.

People desire to be happy. There's no question about it. The pursuit of happiness has become our chief aim in life. It’s our purpose. We could debate whether or not that is, in fact, the highest calling of mankind. But for the sake of our purposes today, let’s say that it is. I desire to be happy and happiness is worth pursuing.

Here’s the problem…Happiness seems to be a fleeting thing. One moment I have it, the next moment something, or someone has robbed me of my happiness. Let me share a few examples with you...

  • Relational Turmoil
  • My job
  • Lacking Necessities (mate, $, house, etc.)
  • Poor Health

All these things block us from achieving our ultimate goal – being happy. So we search, looking for that thing, or the person that will finally make us happy. We try to achieve the place in our life where nothing can cause us to be unhappy.

We use phrases like, “If only I had…then I’d be happy.” Or “If only I didn't have…then I’d be happy.” After looking high and low, far and wide, we resign ourselves to the fact that we are destined to a life of misery. We think happiness is not attainable in this life.

I’m here to tell you that it's not true. It is possible to be happy in this life. The problem isn't that the goal is unattainable; it is we are seeking it from the wrong source. We are searching in the wrong places.

While relationships, careers, material possessions, and good health can provide moments or happiness, none is the source of true happiness. True happiness is found from only one source – the Lord our God.

The strange thing in life is that if you seek happiness as an end in itself, you will never find it; it will always escape you. It’s like a child catching a soap bubble – he thinks he’s got it, then it bursts and it’s gone and there’s nothing left.

It’s also like a traveler in a desert seeing a mirage of an oasis – he travels towards it only to find it disappears! True happiness, says the Bible, depends upon two things only. The first is our relationship with God, and the second depends on what we really are, not what happens to us. That’s the secret.

He certainly doesn't need our material possessions, but He does desire our life. I pray today that you would stop resisting, proving and questioning and finally surrender to Him. Give your life to Him.

In turn He’ll give to you…

  • Eternal life
  • Eternal rewards
  • The desire of your heart – happiness

...The choice is yours.

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:12-13; John 14:1; Psalm 34:8; John 16:24; Isaiah 26:3-4; Proverbs 16:20; Micah 6:8

Prayer:  Today, may there be peace within you.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing that you are a child of God.
Let His presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, and to bask in the sun.
It is there for each and every one of you. Amen

May God bless you!
