Bible Study Snacks, Romans 5:1-11

Hi, all!

Thank you once again for joining me as we continue our journey through the Book of Romans. This week, we will be studying Chapter 5, verses 1-11. As always, I sincerely hope that you find these Bible Study Snacks helpful and spiritually enlightening.

Before we move on with our study we should briefly review the scripture that we covered during our last meeting together. I strongly feel that reviewing what we previously touched on helps prepare us for our current study.

Looking back...

-Paul reminds the people that the promise that Abraham was to be "a father of many nations" was given in light of his faith, not through some law, so that the promise might be according to grace and sure to those who have the same kind of faith as Abraham.
-The nature of Abraham's obedient faith is illustrated (18-22), with the explanation it was preserved to reassure us that we who have the same kind of faith in God who raised Jesus will find our faith accounted for righteousness in the same way (23-25).

Looking at this week...

-Having proven his proposal of "justification by faith" with evidence from the Old Testament, Paul now discusses the blessings of such justification.
-There is salvation from God's wrath. All of this is made possible when we are reconciled to God through the death of His Son and should be the basis for endless rejoicing.
- To explain further the way in which salvation is made possible, Paul compares Christ to Adam.

Let’s pray:

Heavenly father, please guide us as we study your Word today; I pray that our hearts and our minds will be open so that we will not only receive your Gospel, but learn from it as well; you are the Light of the world, Lord, and your Spirit will illuminate our path as we journey through your teachings. In the name of Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Carefully read through Romans 5:1-11. Here again, I must stress the word “carefully” because if you aren’t “careful” you will miss Paul’s point. Let Paul speak to you through his writings as if he were right there sharing his story in person.

This week’s study questions:

1. What two results do you have in your life because you are justified by faith (Romans 5:1-2a)? (The word 'justification' means declared and accepted as righteous before God).
2. Who enabled us to receive these two privileges (Romans 5:1-2)?
3. Rewrite the short phrase “we exult in our tribulations” from Romans 5:3 with words you commonly use.
4. What special qualities should we expect God to be developing in our lives during difficult times (Romans 5:3-4)?
5. Who actually fills our hearts with the love of God (Romans 5:5)?
6.As a Christian, the Holy Spirit ___________ (Romans 5:5).
7. “At the __________ time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
8. What kind of people did Christ die for (Romans 5:6-8)?
9. How did God demonstrate His love toward us (Romans 5:8)?
10. What will we be saved from (Romans 5:9)?
11. Read verses 5:1 and 5:9 and please fill in the blanks. “having been justified ____________“ (Romans 5:1).
12. “having been justified _____________“ (Romans 5:9).
13. What was our relationship with God like at the time we were reconciled with God (Romans 5:10)? (Reconciliation is the restoration of a relationship).
14. How does Jesus make sure we will not suffer harm on Judgment Day (Romans 5:10; Mt 25:31-34)?
15. From verses 2, 3, 11 of chapter 5, please finish the phrases: {Note: NIV uses “rejoice in” not “exult”}
-5:2 “we exult in ___________“
-5:3 “we also exult in __________”
-5:11 “we also exult in __________”

Finally, after answering the study questions, read Romans 5:1-11 again. Pause and read each question and verse as many times as you feel necessary. Keep in mind that you might see something new that you overlooked the first time around.

As we go along in our studies together, I will pray that God’s message will continue to come through to you loud and crystal clear. Until next time, have a great week everyone!

God bless you!

Sheri
