Saturday Scripture Gold: Genesis 1:3-5

Hello, friends!

Every week, I will be taking a verse or two from the Bible and attempt to dig beneath the surface to uncover nuggets of truth, wisdom, and knowledge from within its words. I pray that you too will be inspired to keep on digging into that scripture!

This week's Bible verse: Genesis 1:3-5

The creation of light was the initial step in the creation of life. "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3) was the first word of God spoken after His creative Spirit "moved" upon the primary material out of which He created the heavens and the earth, which lay there still and quiet, until the utterance of that word, in the chaos of darkness and desolation.

Light is one of the most wonderful, cheering, and useful of all the works of God; called into being on the first of the six days of creation, by his voice: "Let there be light;" and there was light. No object better illustrates whatever is pure, glorious, spiritual, joyful, and beneficent. Hence the beauty and force of the expressions, "God is light," 1 John 1:5, and "the Father of lights," James 1:17; Christ is the "Sun of righteousness," and "the light of the world," John 1:9, 8:12.

The word of God is also "a light," Psalm 119:105; truth and Christians are lights, John 3:19 12:36; prosperity is "light," Esther 8:16; and heaven is full of light, Revelation 21:23-25. Keep in mind that the opposite of all these is "darkness."

The word "light" is Divinely rich in its comprehensiveness and meaning. Its material splendor is used throughout the Scriptures as the symbol and synonym of all that is luminous and radiant in the mental, moral and spiritual life of men and angels; while the eternal God, because of His holiness and moral perfection, is pictured as "dwelling in light unapproachable" (1 Timothy 6:16).

Jesus uses the illustration of light in Matthew 5:14-16 to challenge and remind Christians that their lives are open books. "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). Darkness is the universal symbol and condition of sin and death; light the symbol and expression of holiness.

Being a light in the world is an important responsibility. Have you ever stopped to think that you might be the only Christian your friends, co-workers, colleagues, etc., will ever meet? If this is the case, are you a good example of "light" in this world? If not, what are some things you could do to become a shining example of light for God?

Scripture: Leviticus 24:1-4; Job 24:13-17; 38:8-20; John 3:19-21; 1 John 1:5-8; 2 Samuel 22:29; Psalm 27:1; John 8:12; Revelation 22:3-5.

Let's Pray:

Lord hear my prayer, May your love protect me while I dream; May your light guide me when I venture where I have never been; May your warmth spread to those I do not know; Bring me understanding so that I may grow.
Amen

God bless you,

Rochelle
