Did you know that everywhere in the world—among civilized, cultured races, and among primitive and aboriginal peoples, in the heat of tropical climes and amid Arctic snows, man recognizes a Creator, a God to Whom they may raise their hands in worship and prayer?
When we first come into this world, we are extremely dependent on others. We need parents or other providers to feed and clean up after ourselves. Even as small children, we sense our need for parental care and protection.
As we get older, it is common to believe that we no longer need anyone or anything. Starting in adolescence, where many think they no longer need their parents. This often continues throughout adulthood, where many think they can take care of themselves. Mankind is not as self-sufficient as many would like to believe. We are extremely dependent on many things despite our denials.
Assuming that one believes in God, let's base our discussion today on three simple yet significant reasons why we need God in our lives. We will start with the fact that HE IS OUR CREATOR!
GOD is the creator of the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1; Exodus 20:11; Hebrews 11:3); and of mankind, both male and female (Genesis 1:27; 5:2). Even in the womb, God has a role in giving us life (Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5). He made us, not we ourselves (cf. Psalm 100:3).
God as our creator knows us better than we ourselves. Even as the manufacturer knows his product better than anyone else. God knows our weaknesses and our strengths, and is the best source to find the answers to such questions as:
a. Where did I come from?
b. Why am I here?
c. Where am I going?
d. How should I live?
We need God because as our Creator He is the only reliable "tech-support" to help us make sense and use of our lives! Another reason we need God is because He is our redeemer!
GOD IS THE REDEEMER! Unfortunately, all have made a mess of their lives (Romans 3:23). It would be safe to say that some have made a bigger mess than others! Some have done so more than others, but all are in need of major correction (Romans 3:9). But God offers Himself as our Redeemer - Ps 34:22
God as our redeemer makes it possible for us to start fresh (cf. Psalm 103:1-5). He did this by sending His Son, Jesus (Galatians 4:4-5; Titus 2:11-14). He offered His Son's blood to redeem us from our sins (1 Peter 1:17-19).
We need God because as our Redeemer we have the opportunity to be forgiven of sins and to start our lives anew! A third reason we need God is because GOD IS THE PROVIDER!
God is the provider of physical life itself (Acts 17:28; cf. Psalm 66:8-9). He is the provider of that which sustains our physical life (Acts 14:17; Matthew 5:45). God is the provider of spiritual strength that we need (Ephesians 3:16,20; 6:10).
Remember this...GOD AS OUR PROVIDER...has promised to meet our physical needs (Matthew 6:25-32), if we will put Him and His righteousness first in our lives (Matthew 6:33-34). He has promised to meet our spiritual needs (Phillippians 2:12-13), if we will put on His armor (Ephesians 6:11-18).
Let me try to put all of this information in perspective. More things could be said to illustrate our need for God, but for now, these will have to do..
a. God is our Creator
b. God is our Redeemer
c. God is our Provider
Those who reject any need for God go through life with no true knowledge of self or purpose in life. They have no way to atone for or to truly correct the many mistakes they make. Their lives are devoid of the fullness of God's providential care.
How much better to confess our need for God, and look to Him: for wisdom and guidance in making the best of our time here on earth; for forgiveness and renewal when we mess up our lives through sin; and for providential care and spiritual strength to live the truly "abundant life." That is why WE NEED GOD!
Let's pray:
Lord,
guide us in your gentle mercy,
for left to ourselves
we cannot do your will.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. AMEN
Have a blessed day!
Paula
